6 P.M. Storm Update......

Tricky storm to forecast because you couldn't see it coming. Had to rely on models seeing it form suddenly over Sacramento and move Southward. Cold front earlier this afternoon didn't have much luck clearing the crest. The low forming over Sacramento currently is producing a heavy snowband to the Northeast of the lake. Places just to the East of Truckee are getting dumped on. Northstar is right on the Western edge, but in the heavy band currently.  Heavy band should move slowly South overnight. Not sure how far West the band will hold.  Models still showing .5 inches of liquid overnight so areas where the band hits should see 3-6 inches at Lake level and 5-10 inches above 7000 ft. May be a bit less on the Western crest. Just have to wait till it stops tomorrow now and add it up. BA

Snow Day!....

Just a quick storm update this morning. Models showing a weak cold front breaking off and forming a low that will strengthen over Central CA today. A band of heavier snow is going to form to our North and slowly move South this evening. This is the difference in us getting accumulating snow vs. the dusting. Snow should be falling by this afternoon, with the heaviest snow later in the afternoon into the evening. This storm is going to end up being very similar in timing and amounts as last Friday's storm. Heavier snow is going to form to our North and slowly move South along the Sierra this evening. There won't be any shadowing due to the direction of the storm, but we will have to watch the exact track of storm and where the heaviest snow sets up. Totals could vary significantly in localized areas depending on where heavier bands set-up. Right now, Looking for a general 4-8 inches at the Village and 8-12 inches on the mountain.

Plenty of cold air behind the storm for snowmaking this weekend.  Quiet weather next week with a cool down towards mid-week as a ridge is off the West coast and shots of cold air are diving into the mid section of the country.

MJO has strengthened the past couple of days in the Pacific. There is also a Typhoon "Nida" that is going to get absorbed into the jet stream. The models are still trying to figure out how to deal with all of that energy. Looking for a possible breakthrough of the jetstream and significant precip by next weekend, stay tuned.....BA
