It wasn't the snowiest season to start but thanks to Northstar's huge snowmaking system we had some of the best conditions.

Then in March the snow finally arrived and we picked up 130 inches which doubled the previous four months combined. We added another 40 inches here in April with the last flake falling on Friday.

We finished the season with 301 inches which is 86% of our 350 inch average. Pretty good considering the start of the season.

Enjoy the off-season and see you in Fall as we begin to track the incoming storms for the 2012-2013 season. That pushes us just over 300 inches for the season and we will end up at 86% of our seasonal average. Not bad after the slow start to the season.

Now we are enjoying a beautiful Spring weekend with temperatures up into the 40's. It will even be up into the 50's at the base for closing day on Sunday which is perfect for Spring It On.

The weather will be Spring-like this week with temperatures in the 50's and even into the 60's in the Village by the end of the week. We could see some more snow the last week of April as the pattern looks to remain active.

Tomorrow is closing day so get up here to enjoy the great conditions. The heavy snow continued this morning before tapering off this afternoon. We may have gotten close to 2 feet up top and we'll see with the final tally in the morning.

It's closing weekend and we will have amazing conditions. This makes two seasons in a row closing on fresh snowfall. The sun will return for the weekend and temperatures will be cool. Highs will be in the 30's on the mountains Saturday and then the 40's on Sunday, but we will have the warm April sun.

Another post tomorrow with the storm totals and the season total as we prepare to wrap up and look forward to another great season for 2012-13. We have some heavier snow moving in this evening which will last through the day on Friday.

We should se another 6-12 inches at the base through Friday and 8-16 inches at the summit. Then we could see another inch or two Friday night with lingering snow showers. We should end up in the 18-24 inch range up top for a storm total by Saturday morning.

Then a beautiful weekend with amazing conditions again this year for the closing week. If you are sticking around after we close the weather will remain active to our North and a storm my dip down and bring more snow next Thursday-Friday. We are starting to see some good spillover into the basin this evening so the snow is picking up . We could see 2-4 inches on the mountain by morning.

Then the bigger storm moves in tomorrow and Friday. First the cold front brings heavy snow tomorrow afternoon, and then another wave of heavy snow with the center of the storm Friday morning. Snow showers could linger into Friday night.

Still expecting 12-18 inches from this second storm with half falling Thursday and the other half Friday. Then we could see a few more inches Friday afternoon into Friday night. Total snowfall by Saturday moring of 12-18 inches at the base and 18-24+ inches at the summit.

It looks like a beautiful closing weekend with temperatures up into the 40's by Sunday with lots of sun. Enjoy...BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-45898008411083345132012-04-10T19:18:00.001-07:002012-04-10T19:18:55.659-07:00Here We Go!
The snow should push in by Wednesday morning with this first system that has been stalled off the coast since the weekend. We should see On the mountains 2-4 inches at the base and 4-8 inches at the summit through Wednesday night.

The stronger and colder system blasts in Thursday. No changes to the forecast as this second system will drop heavy snow Thursday afternoon into Thursday night with snow showers lasting through the day on Friday.

Total possible snow totals with the second system of 12-18 inches at the base, and 15-25 inches at the summit. Storm totals by Saturday morning on the mountain of 1-2 feet at the base, and 2-3 feet at the summit.

These storms should push us over 300 inches for the season. The seasonal average is 350 inches, so not a bad season after how it started. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-48386470104305271842012-04-09T20:15:00.000-07:002012-04-09T20:15:30.211-07:00Winter Returns For a Big Finish to the SeasonNot much has changed as we are about to get back to back storms and lots of cold powder this week.

We could see the snow start as early as Tuesday night but the heaviest snow looks to fall on Wednesday with the first system. We could see a dusting Tuesday night and then 3-6 more inches on Wednesday. The snow showers will keep going Wednesday night with a few more inches possible.

The next system looks to be coming in a little more quickly for Thursday. The heaviest snow should move in by afternoon and last into Thursday night. What is going to make this storm good is the cold air with it which will raise the snow ratios. We could see 8-16 inches through Thursday night.

As the cold core of the low moves across the area Friday we should see the coldest temperatures of the week and continued snow showers. We could see several more inches before the snow tapers off Friday night.

All together for the week week as we tally it Saturday morning we could see 12-18 inches at the base and 2+ feet at the summit. This snow will be colder and lighter each day and Friday looks like it could be the best day of the week. This will make a great last dump of the season. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-7368911688299929772012-04-08T19:40:00.000-07:002012-04-08T19:40:06.054-07:001-2 Feet or More This WeekIt was a beatiful Spring weekend here at Northstar but that is all about to change this week as lots of cold and snow is on the way. It looks like we are going to finish the season on a snowy note once again this year.

The forecast models have been in agreement and consistent all week on the storms for this week. That boosts confidence that we will be picking up some decent snowfall amounts. We close next weekend so this will be the last storm of the season, and we will finish with fresh snow just like last season.

The first storm has actually been spinning off the coast all weekend. That will continue on Monday before the next system behind it pushes it inland beginning Tuesday. We will see the winds pick up Monday and Tuesday as it nears and then some snow showers as early as later in the day. The heaviest snow looks to hold off until Wednesday. It looks like we could see 1-3 inches Tuesday night and another 1-3 inches on Wednesday. Another inch or two Wednesday night would bring us to storm total of 4-8 inches.

The next storm is ready to dive in right behind the first one and this one will will have more moisture. It looks like we could see some snow showers move in ahead of the system on Thurday but the heaviest snow will fall Thursday night into Friday with the cold front. The center of the storm looks like it will move inland Friday keeping the snow showers going. It may move through slowly enough to keep the snow showers going all the way into Saturday morning.

It looks like a quick dump Thursday night into Friday morning of 6-12 inches on the mountain. Then the snow showers will add several more inches on the mountain Friday and Friday night. Total for this storm looks to be up to a foot at the base and up to 18 inches at the summit. All told we could see 1-2+ feet on the mountain by next Saturday.

That will be it for the season snow wise but you may be sticking around to enjoy Spring after we close. Looking at the long-range forecast it looks like the storm activity will shift just to our North the second week. Then the last week of the month we could continue to see dry condtions with some more Spring-like weather as a ridge builds off the coast blocking storms. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-72369056678761445312012-04-06T17:03:00.001-07:002012-04-06T17:03:20.801-07:00A Snowy Final Week of the SeasonWe picked up a fresh coating of snow yesterday from the snow showers that moved through. It looks like we will definitely be adding to the 21 inch total for April or even doubling it before the end of the season next Sunday.

We will have quiet weather this weekend and into early next week with temperatures up into the 50's. It should be a beautiful weekend.

Next week will start off quiet but a storm spinning off the coast currently will finally push inland on Wednesday. Right now it looks like we could see snow in the 3-6 inch range with this first system.

A stronger storm will be right on the heels of the first storm and will push in Friday. We could see a foot or two with this system. It would nice to get another dump before the season ends.

We will continue to watch these storms and update daily on the specifics. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-18980989821621888522012-04-05T18:24:00.001-07:002012-04-05T18:24:34.331-07:00Warmer Weather for the Weekend/More Snow Next WeekSnow showers are really firing up nicely this afternoon adding some nice fresh cover to the trails. We could see an inch or two in total through tonight.

We are going to have a break starting tomorrow until around next Wednesday. Temperatures will begin to warm back up into the 40's and 50's over the weekend. A cut-off area of low pressure will spin off the coast early next week and then eventually push inland around Wednesday.

By the time the storm pushes inland Wednesday it doesn't look to have that much moisture. It will bring colder air and the potential for a few to several inches of snow. It's the storm behind it that looks more interesting.

The next system pushes inland Friday and this one looks like it could pull in some good moisture. Right now it looks like we could see several inches up to a foot or two. Could this be the last good storm of the season?

The pattern looks to remain active to our North into the 3rd week of the month. That should leave the chance for some more precip later in the month. The teleconnection forecast look favorable for continued unsettled weather. We'll see..BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-43294735019306056172012-04-04T20:26:00.001-07:002012-04-04T20:26:37.481-07:00Cold and Snow Showers ContinueNorthstar picked up another 4 inches last night. Cold air also showed up and it will stick around through Friday.

Snow showers will fire up again tonight and into Thursday. Not expecting more than an inch or two over the next 36 hours from the snow showers.

Over the weekend and into the beginning of next week nice weather will return as the ridge builds in. A cut-off low will spin off the coast helping to bring in the warmer temps, but eventually it will move inland bringing colder air and snow.

Right now it looks like the storm will push inland next Wednesday bringing the chance for several inches for snow. More interesting is the next storm that helps to push the first storm inland. This storm could arrive next Friday and it looks like it could have a lot more moisture. We may still have another storm to go where we measure in feet. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-80010190857295980802012-04-03T20:21:00.002-07:002012-04-03T20:21:41.788-07:00Lots of Cold Coming and Some SnowHighs have been in the 50's the past 2 days. We will have highs only in the 30's the next few days at the base of the mountain and only in the 20's up top. The best chances for accumulating snow will be 1-2 inches tonight and then maybe another inch or two Thursday night.

The weekend into early next week will be quiet as a cut-off low spins off the coast. The forecast models disagree on what it does next week. The some bring it inland to our North Monday with the next system diving in further South into Tahoe Wednesday. Others keep the storm off the coast until Wednesday before bringing it inland over Tahoe. Either way the next chance for light snow looks to be the middle of next week.

Then it looks like we could see another system towards the end of next week. The storm later next week has the potential to bring a decent shot of snow so we have to keep an eye on that.

Looking at the long-range pattern the teleconnection forecasts suggest the storm door stays open but it's April and the jet stream is weakening and retracting North. We could see some more unsettled weather and hard to predict cut-off storms later in the month to finish off the season. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-27507738291938045452012-04-01T17:58:00.002-07:002012-04-01T17:58:26.211-07:00Great End to March and Start to AprilNorthstar picked up 17 inches Saturday and Saturday night. That brings the total for the week to 3 feet. March finished on a good note and April started on one as well. We will rebound back to spring Monday and Tuesday before a cold trough settles in by mid-week.

The next trough will dig down the West Coast and bring colder air and a chance for light snow Tuesday night into Wednesday. There is not moisture with this system so the colder air will have a bigger impact than the snowfall. We could see a few inches of snow Wednesday-Friday with scattered snow showers and highs only in the 30's on the mountain as the trough hangs around the West Coast.

The ridge looks like it will build in next weekend bringing quiet weather for at least a week. Looking at the teleconnection forecast we could see some more active weather later in the mont of April, but we have plenty of time to watch for that. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-183099707465470482012-03-30T19:52:00.001-07:002012-03-30T19:52:49.155-07:00Quick Dump of Snow Saturday-Sat. NightEverything is still on track for a nice little dump of snow Saturday afternoon into Saturday night. We saw some mild temperatures today but a strong cold front will blast through Saturday bringing colder temperatures and heavy snow.

There may be some light rain or snow showers in the morning, but it looks like most of the precip will hold off until the afternoon when the cold front approaches. We should see a period of heavy snowfall during the evening as the cold front pushes through and then snow showers that will taper by Sunday morning.

Snowfall forecast is still on track and really hasn't changed all week. Right now I'm going to stick with 4-8 inches in the Village, 5-10 at the base and 10-15 inches up top by Sunday morning.

Monday and Tuesday we should rebound right back into the 50's with sun as the ridge builds in temporarily. Then the next trough pushes in Wednesday but there is not as much moisture with the cold front this time. We could pick up a few inches of light snow. The trough looks to hang around the West Coast through Friday so the temperatures will be cold for this time of year.

Then it looks like the ridge could build in off the coast and keep us dry for about a week. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-70026990178511232552012-03-29T20:00:00.000-07:002012-03-29T20:00:24.315-07:00125 Inches for March and CountingNorthstar picked up another 6 inches yesterday which brought the 4 day total to 19 inches as of this morning. It also brought the total for March to 125 inches!

No changes on the forecast for the weekend. After a break on Friday the snow will return Saturday as a strong cold front moves through. Still looks like 4-8 inches possible at the base and 8-12 inches up top through Saturday night.

It looks like the snow showers could last into Sunday now with a few more inches possible. The models are trying to figure out next week. After a break to start the week it looks like we will see another system Wednesday with light snowfall. The question is what happens after that?

The European model brings in a strong system Thursday and then a has a cut-off low spinning down the coast through the weekend of the 7th. That would bring light snow through the period with several more inches possible. The GFS keeps the Thursday system to our North and then keeps the cut-off low off the coast with it not coming inland until possibly the following week.

It was looking like the ridge would build in for quiet weather beyond the middle of next week but the Euro is putting that in question. We will have to watch over the weekend. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-52469647997563115672012-03-28T19:26:00.000-07:002012-03-28T19:26:18.116-07:00The Snowy Week Continues This WeekendNorthstar picked up another 8 inches as of this morning bringing the 3 day total up to 13 inches. The snow continued to fall all morning and into the afternoon before tapering off piling up a few more inches.

We will have a break Thursday and Friday with warming temperatures up into the 50's by Friday. Then on Saturday a strong cold front will blast in dropping the temperatures a quick dump of snow. We should pick up 4-8 inches at the base and 8-12 inches at the summit by Sunday morning.

Then another break with the sun returning Sunday through Tuesday of next week. The temperatures will also rebound back up into the 50's.

The next system will dig into the West Coast by the middle of next week. This storm does not look that impressive but it will bring the return of colder temps and some snowfall. It looks like the trough could hang around the West Coast with colder temps and snow showers into Easter weekend. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-74887845747414669932012-03-27T19:33:00.002-07:002012-03-27T19:38:18.576-07:00The Snow Just Keeps Falling Here in MarchNorthstar picked up another 2 inches yesterday bringing the storm total to 4 inches and the March total to 110 inches! The next storm is already pushing in as we speak and snow is beginning to fall.

No changes to the snowfall forecast from yesterday. Expecting 5-10 inches in the Village and 10-15 inches up on the mountain by Wednesday afternoon.

Temperatures will be back into the 50's by Friday before a strong cold front brings snow Saturday. Right now it looks like several inches are possible in the Village Saturday night after the snow levels drop and a foot or more possible on the mountain.

The next system for Monday is trending further South on the models today so we may pick up a few more inches. Then the next sytem for next Wednesday is also trending further South. Not big storms but enough to bring several more inches and keep the snowpack in good shape going into April.

It looks like the ridge builds in after that for about a week giving us a break from the storms. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-21195645497707468192012-03-26T20:23:00.001-07:002012-03-26T20:23:33.094-07:00Snowy End to a Snowy MarchNorthstar has picked up 108 inches so far in March after only 133 inches the four months combined prior to March. The base is the thickest it has been all season and we have more snow on the way this week.

The next storm is approaching the Pacific NW which will direct moisture into the Sierra Tuesday night into Wednesday. Snow will begin to fall Tuesday night and into the day on Wednesday. Looking at the latest forecast model runs it looks like we could see 4-8 inches of wet snow at the base and 8-12 inches up on the mountain.

There will be two more systems pushing into the Pacific Northwest Thursday and Friday staying to our North. Being on the South side of the jet stream and with the Southwest flow we will see some mild air push in with highs into the 50's by Friday. Snow levels will come up as high as 8000 ft. but right now I am not expecting much if any precip to make it this far South.

Then on Saturday a cold front will swing through dropping snow levels to lake level, and dropping several inches of snow. Right now it looks like we could see several inches to a foot on the mountain. All together we could see 1-2 additional feet on the mountain by Sunday.

The forecast models diverge next week with some showing the chance for another storm Tuesday before the ridge builds in, and other showing the ridge building in right away. We may see another storm that could bring several more inches next Tuesday but then after that it does look like we dry out for at least a week. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-3216162399615434282012-03-25T20:12:00.000-07:002012-03-25T20:12:02.172-07:00Chances for Snow ContinuePrecip worked into the basin a little earlier than expected this morning. We saw snow off and on throughout the day and may have picked up an inch or two of snow on the mountain.

As the core of the low pass to our South tonight and colder air moves in we should see light snow showers continue into Monday morning. We may see another inch or two on the mountain.

The next system will move in Tuesday night into Wednesday. Right now it looks like 6-9 inches are possible with this system. We will have to keep an eye on it as some forecast models show twice as much precip as others.

The next system moves in Friday. The models have been trending further North with this storm and we may not see much until the cold front pushes through Saturday into Sunday. We could see several inches of snow when it does push through over the weekend.

It looks like we could see one more system early next week but then it looks like we may see drier conditions for a week. Plenty of time for that to change and plenty of activity on the way this week to watch. That will happen by Sunday afternoon and we should see snow Sunday night into Monday morning. Not expecting a lot of snow with this system but we could pick up 2-4 inches with maybe up to 6 inches up top.

The next storm is not far behind and could move in as early as Tuesday night. This storm is not a big one either but it is stronger than the storm this weekend with a better trajectory and forcing. Right now it looks like we could pick up 6-12 inches with this one.

The next storm and biggest of the week looks to move in on Friday. We could see two waves one Friday and another Saturday. It looks like it could be quite a snowy weekend next weekend. It's a little too early to forecast snow totals but it looks like we could pick up a foot or two.

All together this will be an active week Sunday to Sunday and all added up we should be measuring the week in feet. That will change this weekend as a more active weather pattern moves back in bring several chances for snow the next 10 days.

The first storm this weekend is still giving the forecast models trouble. They were starting to agree this morning and then diverged again this afternoon. Some bring the snow in as early as Saturday afternoon while other hold it off until Sunday night. There is not much pushing this storm forward so we may just have to watch to see how it progresses on Saturday.

Overall there is agreement that the storm will push through by Monday with total snowfall of around 3-6 inches on the mountains and maybe up to 9 up top.

The next storm is not far behind and will move in Tuesday-Wednesday. Some forecast models show this storm bringing a couple feet of snow while other models show amounts more in the 6-12 inch range. Either way we'll take it and we'll keep watching the trend over the next few days.

A much colder storm looks like it will move in next Friday-Saturday bringing a decent shot of snow. Way too early to make a snowfall forecast but right now it looks like it could be in the foot plus range. Overall it looks like we will remain in an active weather pattern for the next two weeks with several chances for fresh snowfall. That cold front will weaken as it approaches us tonight and we will be lucky to get a shower or two into Thursday. At most we could see a dusting on the mountain.

The next trough will dig down off the coast by Friday and the low will spin off the coast slowly pushing inland. The models are still struggling with the timing of the precip making it into the Tahoe basin. Eventually the front will push through by Sunday into Monday bringing snow.

It looks like as the core of the low comes through Sunday night into Monday it may come through just to our South which would keep the snowfall light. Right now snowfall amounts look to be around 3-6 inches Sunday into Monday at the base with 6-9 inches up top. Temperatures will be much colder with highs only in the 30's on the mountains.

The next system will by diving in by next Wednesday and may stay mostly to our North with just some light snow. Some of the models suggest the storm doest come far enough South to get a moderate storm with amounts in the 6-12 inch range.

We could see another moderate sized snow the weekend of the 31st. After that the ridge may start to build in off the coast bringing drier conditions. BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7174928766038559561.post-65418474916518489732012-03-19T19:56:00.000-07:002012-03-19T19:56:20.518-07:006 Feet in the Past Week!Northstar ended up with 6 feet of snow up top over the past week. That is on top of the 3 feet from earlier in the month bring the total for March to 102 inches. I think that counts as a Miracle March after only having 142 inches the first four months of the season. The month isn't over yet and we will have 3 more chances at seeing a storm before the end of the month.

There is another storm approaching the Pacific NW that will move in on Tuesday. Warmer air coming up ahead of the storm will override the cold air in place and some light snow showers could break out tonight into Tuesday not expecting more than a dusting of snow. The ridge off the coast will continue to build in toward CA through the middle of the week with temperatures warming back into the 40's and 50's by Wednesday.

Another storm will move into the Pacific NW on Thursday flattening the ridge but most of the precip will still stay to the North of Tahoe. We could see a few light snow showers on the mountains and some light rain/snow showers at lake level.

Then the trough will dig down off the coast as the ridge builds in over the West. It looks like the trough will cut off from the jet stream forming a cut-off low off the coast by Friday. This time of year we tend to start seeing lots of cut-off lows as the jet stream begins to retract North in the Spring.

The ridge over the West will try to keep the low from spinning inland but it looks like the next storm coming across the Pacific will help to start pushing it inland over the weekend. Some forecast models show the low pushing in Saturday and slowly spinning across CA through Monday and others Sunday through Tuesday. The question is how much moisture will it have when it comes in. Right now models show anything from 6 inches up to 2 feet over the 3 day period.

The next upstream system that helps to push the first one inland may move in right on the heels of the first next Wednesday. Some forecast models show it becoming a cut-off low as well but coming inland by Thursday as the first storm has cleared the way and another storm behind it will help to push it inland. Another storm is right behind that and could push in by Saturday the 31st.

We will have to continue to watch the track of the systems next week to see how far South they end up coming and how much precip they can bring into Tahoe. The snow continued to fall all day today bringing several more inches. The snow showers should begin to wind down overnight and be done by morning.

The ridge will try and build back in off the CA coast Monday but it will remain pretty flat with storms continuing to hit the Pacific NW just to our North. There will be one Tuesday and another Thursday but at most it looks like we will just see some clouds and maybe a random snow shower down here this week. Temperatures will be back into the 40's by Wednesday.

The trough digging down the West coast will then try to push inland next weekend and the only question is when. The GFS has been consistent with Saturday-Sunday but the Euro holds it off until next Monday. The European ensembles show Saturday as well so for now it looks like we could see some colder air and more snowfall next weekend.

The pattern for week 2 looks like it will feature continued storms in to the Pacific NW, but how far South the storm track will be is the question. We could see more flat ridging off the coast keeping storms just to our North. We are back into the positive PNA phase which tends to have ridging and drier conditions. That brings the total for the week up to 5 feet now up top.

An area of low pressure is spinning over CA to the South of Tahoe as of Saturday afternoon. It is moving slowly and sending moisture Northward into the Tahoe basin. Snow showers will continue Saturday night and then through the day on Sunday as the trough moves through.

We could see another 2-4 inches at the base and 3-6 inches up top by Sunday morning and then the same during the day on Sunday. That means we could add up to a foot of new snow on top of the 5 feet that has already fallen this week.

The rest of next week the weather will stay unsettled with clouds and some wind as storm move in just to our North. It looks like the snow will stay to the North at least until the end of the week with the ridge off the coast. Next weekend a trough digging down the coast may push inland bringing colder air and the chance for more snow. stay tuned...BABAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11090609056858451141noreply@blogger.com0
